Teeny tiny googly eye cookies! It’s an idea I have had on my “cookie to-make” list for almost 10 years, and I’ve finally gotten around to making them.
These “Owl only have eyes for you” cookies are only about the size of a teaspoon and are definitely whimsical and fun for Valentine’s Day or any time. Without further ado, I’ll share how I made these in the notes and video below.

How to Make Googly Eye Cookies
I’ll share a basic how to, along with recipes, templates and links to the things you’ll need to make these cookies. The decorating steps can be seen in the video posted above.
Notes about the Googly Eyes
Important to note about the empty capsules, size 000, which I used to make the googly eyes: Make sure you tell your cookie recipients to remove before eating. Although they are safe to ingest and technically edible, they are crunchy to bite into and can have slightly sharp edges when broken.
You can find links to all the recipes, decorating items you’ll need, templates etc., a little further down in the blog post.
To make the googly eyes, I used the largest size, 000, empty gelatin capsules I could find. Trim or cut the capsules (can be seen in the video), and use a 10 mm hole punch to cut a matching size of edible frosting paper for each eye. Place a dry dot of black icing (template below), on the center of the frosting sheet circle, pipe a line of white icing around the perimeter, and place the trimmed capsule on top. Press down gently to adhere. Be careful not to move the googly eye around at this stage, as the black icing may stick to the white icing holding the capsule in place. Once the white icing has dried, your googly eye is ready!
Cookie Recipe
I used my sugar cookie recipe. You can find it here. (Just use the sugar cookie recipe, not the strawberry coulis). I hand cut the owl cookies with an exacto knife.
Royal Icing
