Hello hello! It’s getting quite pumpkiny over here… Not only in oh-so-delicious pumpkin spice cookie flavour, but in design as well. I’ve been decorating cookies for over 10 years now and I still find these one of my favorite autumn, or any time really, cookies to decorate. The technique is simple and easily mastered with just a few cookie basics, really!
If you’re new to cookie decorating, I promise, these are doable. Yes, practice does help with piping, but with the right recipes and icing consistency, you’re well on your way to a satisfying decorating (and eating!) experience. Experienced decorators, I’d love to see what your cookie creations look like, please feel free to tag me on social media somewhere so I can see!
Here’s what you’ll need if you’d like to make these:
Cookie Recipe
These are pumpkin spice cut-out cookies, you can find the recipe here. There are other cut-out cookie recipes here.
The pumpkin cookie cutter can be found in How Sweet is That? ‘s shop here.
Royal Icing
You can find my favorite royal icing recipe here. The consistency of icing is key for easy decorating. Click here to see a YouTube video on finding the right icing thickness.
Decorating Items
What you’ll need:

Decorating Steps
This video on outlining and flooding is a good place to start if you’re new to decorating cookies with royal icing. These cookie decorating basics YouTube videos may also be helpful to get you started.
Besides the video tutorial on YoutTube which I’ve shared here, I’ve also shared a few how-to videos on Instagram, which you can see here.
A few quick notes… The deeper shade of orange was made by adding a bit of red to orange gel coloring.
If you like step by step photos in addition to the video, you can see another pumpkin cookie post HERE.
