It was a busy weekend getting ready for Canada’s Baking & Sweets show in merely days – I was working on items for my cupcake and cookie demonstrations there, like these teapot cupcake toppers…
… but I just had to get out and enjoy some of the fall colors beginning to show up everywhere. My instagram photo just doesn’t do it justice!
Even though I’m working on new cookie and cupcake items for the Redpath Sugar booth (thanks Redpath for sponsoring me btw!), everything won’t be ready to post for a while longer, so I thought I’d share a few fall sweet decorating ideas with you. And if you’re coming to Canada’s Baking & Sweets show, and would like to come find me there, I’d love to meet you! Here’s my schedule:
Also a little heads up – a bunch of fun giveaways are coming soon! Everything from cakelava’s new book, Extreme Cakeovers, Cheap Cookie Cutters cookie cutters and a PierOne gift certificate giveaway – Yay! In the meantime, hope you’re enjoying the season where you are, and happy decorating!

Good Morning. I have a question about decorating with royal icing. I have just begun decorating cookies and I didn’t do badly on my first batch but one thing I noticed is that my royal icing isn’t even all over my cookie. I outlined and immediately flooded like I’ve seen you do in various videos. I used the zig zag method and I also use the 10 second rule icing. I gently shake the cookie to get it to spread evenly but I notice as it’s drying there are a few “lower” spots or “dents” in cookie icing. How do I get a smooth and even layer of icing on my cookies? Thank you!
Leigh Ann

Hi Leigh Ann,
Try pressing out more icing when you get to the center of the cookie, to make it fuller. Sometimes if there’s less icing in the middle, it will sink there. A few other ideas… Make your icing a tad bit thicker so it holds its “poofiness” (my new made-up word 😉 and check that your cookies don’t have a dip in the middle when they’re baked. Hope that helps!
