Happy Friday! Would you like some donuts? Or donut sugar cookies?
Both are delicious but I thought it would be fun to recreate a cookie version. I tried to make them as puffy as possible to make them look like the real deal donuts.
These cookies are definitely for you if you’ve been too intimidated or scared to try decorating cookies with royal icing. The design is simple and you can have fun with different sprinkles and designs. Even as someone who has been decorating for years, I really enjoyed doing these! There are so many different options and they’re quick and easy to decorate. It was fun to share them with my friend’s daughter for her birthday too!
Video – How to Decorate Simple Donut Cookies
Here’s a video for you and a basic how-to broken down below.
The video is in fast forward for the sake of time, but if you have any questions about the decorating process, please feel free to ask below in the comment section.
Cookie Recipe
These are roll out sugar cookies; you can find the recipe here. There are other cut-out cookie recipes here.
Cookie Cutters & Tools
(Some of these are affiliate links, I only recommend products I use and love):
Fluted Circle Cookie Cutters – I used circle cutters approx. 3.5 inches and 1 inch. You can use any size you like, I just wanted to match the gift bag I found. (Pictured below). I was inspired by the colors and designs on this gift bag I found at Home Sense, and stayed quite similar to the bag in terms of designs, but you could do so many more donut styles! The bag is made by roobee by mara-mi, but I don’t see it on their site anymore.
Royal Icing
You can find my favorite royal icing recipe here. The consistency of icing is key for easy decorating. Click here to see a YouTube video on finding the right icing thickness.
Decorating Items
What you’ll need (These are affiliate links):
- Piping Tips – PME #1.5 , PME #2.5
- Piping Bags, Tipless Piping Bags
- Couplers
- Gel Colors; Wilton Brown, Wilton Pink, Rainbow Dust ProGels; Ivory, Mint Green, Brown
- Scribe Tool or Toothpicks
For the gel colors, I think most of the icing colors are straight forward, but for the browns I used Wilton Brown for the lighter shade and Rainbow Dust ProGels for the darker brown.
For the piping bags, I mainly use these, but experimented with the tipless bags with these cookies a bit.
Decorating Steps
