How to Decorate Angel Cookies With Royal Icing
Gingerbread Cookie Recipe
The gingerbread cookie recipe can be found here. There are other cut-out cookie recipes here.
What you’ll need to make the dough (these are affiliate links):
I used a large rolling pin and the*Dough E-Z Mat to roll out the dough. You’ll also need baking sheets.
*I would like you to know that I will receive an affiliate commission if you purchase the Dough E-Z mat through my site and I only recommend products that I love and use myself. You can get 10% off your purchase of the Dough E-Z mat with coupon code sweetopia.
The cookie design is from this Shutterstock.com image here, by svaga. The cookie cutter is custom made, and is a little bit different than the original image (size and angle of dress) and you can find it in HowSweetisThat’s online store here.
Royal Icing
You can find my favorite royal icing recipe here. The consistency of icing is key for easy decorating. Click here to see a YouTube video on finding the right icing thickness.
Decorating Items
What you’ll need (these are affiliate links):

- Edible Black Pen
- Rolkem Edible Gold Dust

Decorating Steps
This video on outlining and flooding is a good place to start if you’re new to decorating cookies with royal icing. These cookie decorating basics YouTube videos may also be helpful to get you started.
Besides the video tutorial on YouTube which I’ve shared here, I’ve also shared a few how-to videos on Instagram, which you can see here.
Notes
- I loved making these cookies and will definitely make them again. I will change the width of the horn near the angel’s mouth though, making it somewhat wider. That would make it easier to fill with icing.
- By the time I thought to decorate more ethnicities I had only one more cookie left to decorate; next time I’ll do a wider variety and different hair lengths.
- Same with the dress… For simplicity’s sake I did all of them the same, but it would be fun to play with different colors and details.

Ohhhhh what cuteness, Marian. They look so precious.
So perfectly piped as usual. And all I can think about is what a wonderful talent God gave you when He made you. I see Him in all your creations.
Thanks so much for this amazing video. What an effort!
And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Hi Cat,
I’ve contacted Sherry from How Sweet is That? and She couldn’t believe it, but they sold out in one day! She let me know she ordered more angel cutters for her shop yesterday, and will post on her Instagram page when they come in.
Thanks for commenting! xo

Dear Marian- I was wondering what you recommend as far as keeping extra icing to decorate a few days later? I use your recipe- and it makes a nice amount, and I often have parties each weekend in December I either host or go to, and so make fresh cookies during the week. But I don’t know how to store the extra made up icing in the bags to use on the next batch. Suggestions? Either how to store decorated cookies an extra week, or the icing if I want to not do all of them at the same time? Thanks!!
Happy Decorating! 🙂
Marian (Sweetopia) says
Hi Stephanie,
You can freeze the icing if it’s a really long time period but otherwise, here is a post for you on storing icing:

And a post on the shelf life of cookies:

Happy decorating!

I love this cutter, but it is so expensive. $8 plus $15 for shipping on any order, no matter how small or size. I’m hunting for any similar looking cutter.
