What does a decorated cookie and plants have to do with each other?
I’ll have to back up a bit and explain.
I am not a gardener. I do love being outside, can appreciate the beauty of plants & flowers and will get into it once I get started… but it’s not like I love gardening and feel an urge to get out there.
Needless to say, my garden is in sore need of some tending.
(I’m too embarassed to show you the full pics).
Or at least it did.
When my neighbour Stacey asked if I could make some princess cookies for her daughter Abby’s birthday party, I thought an ‘exchange of services’ might be a good idea. She loves gardening, I love making cookies.
(And I have quite a lot of garden which needed some love. Thanks Stacey!).
These are some pics of the princess cookies I ended up making for the party.
The recipes for the sugar cookies and royal icing are from Peggy Porschen’s Pretty Party Cakes. A ‘how to decorate cookies tutorial’ can be found here. Some cookies I pipe freehand and for some, I need a little help. 😉 That’s where this pricey, yet invaluable KopyKake drawing projector comes in handy. I’ll be showing you how to use it in a future tutorial.
I really need to learn how to take pictures. Some of these were taken with artificial lighting, and some near a window for natural light. Those look a bit ‘colder’.
I was inspired by stickers and this ribbon in terms of design and fun colors.
Resisting the sparkles was futile; I did end up using disco dust again. If you’d like to use it, sprinkle the dust on while the royal icing is wet. Gently shake off the excess and tidy up the edges with a paintbrush when the cookies are dry. For other examples see here and here.
Happy Birthday Princess Abby!

I’m sure you already know this, but some of the photography packages have a really easy light balance fixer on them, I just use windows photo editing, but flickr has the capability too.

Thank you all so much for the comments! Jenny, I’m fairly new to photography and editing, so I’m not exactly sure how to do that; but I’ll find out. Thanks for the tip!

I used luster dust (it’s a powder), dipped a clean paintbrush used only for that purpose, and painted/dusted the cheeks on.
